Antioxidants Explained

When metal rusts the process is called oxidation. The oxidation continues until the item concerned breaks down or stops working efficiently.

Obviously, the human body does not rust but the oxidation process and the formation of what are called 'free radicals' do cause damage to the body's cells - resulting in eventual loss of function and ageing. Our bodies are being constantly bombarded and invaded with thousands of substances which they cannot properly deal with e.g. high levels of sunlight, atmospheric pollution, alcohol, tobacco, heavy metals, pesticides, food colourants, chemicals in the air and the water we drink. Many processed foods, drugs and medicines can also cause problems when they react with the oxygen in the body which then allows the free radicals to develop.

It has been proved by scientists around the world that free radicals are a major factor in the development of over 200 medical conditions e.g. Cancer, Arthritis, hardening of the arteries, heart conditions, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Diabetes, Strokes, Thrombosis etc. etc. Free radicals, which can affect all cells in the body plus cause premature ageing can only be slowed down by Anti-Oxidants.

Vitamin E: nuts and seeds, avocados, olive/safflower/sunflower oils, wheat germ, liver, leafy green vegetables

Vitamin C: (Ascorbic acid): citrus fruits, green peppers, broccoli, leafy green vegetables, strawberries, tomatoes, cantaloupe, potatoes

Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene and Carotenoids: orange/green/yellow vegetables and fruits such as squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, mango, papaya, pumpkin, green leafy vegetables.

Selenium: seafood, red meat, pork, chicken, wheat bread, eggs, chicken, garlic

Other Antioxidants: red wine, purple grapes, blueberries, cranberries, pomegranate, cranberries, tea, tomato and tomato products, pink grapefruit, watermelon, dark green leafy vegetables, flax seed and other seeds, oatmeal, whole grains and beans.
